Methylfenidát v neretardované formě je indikován neurologem a z prostředků veřejného zdravotního pojištění hrazen v léčbě nadměrné denní spavosti u narkolepsie dospělých a dětí od 12 let, pokud interferuje s pracovními a volnočasovými aktivitami nemocného. Léčba methylfenidátem není dále hrazena, pokud po 3 měsících není dosaženo adekvátní odpovědi (redukce symptomů somnolence alespoň o 50 %), a to ani při užití vyšších dávek (až 60mg denně), významných nežádoucích účincích, kontraindikaci nebo nezájmu nemocného o léčbu.
